The Anatomy of a Cover Letter

Attaching a cover letter with your resume will help you stand out as a strong candidate. It is highly recommended that you include a cover letter with your resume unless it specifically says a cover letter is not required. The way you format your cover letter matters a lot. If your cover letter is sloppy, poorly designed, and unprofessional, it can be a big turn off to recruiters and hiring manager, no matter how qualified you are.
The anatomy of a cover letter should always include several sections including the following:

1. Cover letter Header:

A cover letter header should contain the contact information for both the applicant and the potential employer.

2. Cover letter Salutation:

Also referred to as a greeting, should address the hiring manager directly whenever possible. If your research doesn’t yield the hiring manager’s name, then use “Dear Hiring Manager”

3. Cover letter Introduction:

This is where you’ll indicate which position you’re applying to and indicate your interest in being considered for the role.

4. Cover letter Body:

The body of the cover letter is the “meat” of the cover letter. It can include up to three additional paragraphs that describe your qualification. These paragraphs should not be taken directly from your resume, but should delve more into your accomplishments. Make sure you do good research on the organization to understand and express how your skills and accomplishments align. How to Write a Cover letter FAQ

Do your research to see if you can identify the hiring manager or the recruiter who is working on that position and address your cover letter to that person. If your research doesn’t provide you with a specific name, then use “Dear Hiring Manager” in your salutation. Never start the cover letter with ‘To Whom It May Concern’ because this is too informal and shows very little effort.
Your cover letter should not exceed more than one page. Just as recruiters take an average of 6 seconds to read a resume, they also scan your cover letter.
